This world can get a little crazy sometimes. Between work, school, friends, family members, hobbies, commitments and significant others, things can get hectic quickly. Life is full of surprising twists and turns, success, and happy moments, and possibly more failures than we’d often like to admit. Going through a breakup, getting into a fight with a friend, disappointing a family member, being scolded at work or getting a bad grade on an assignment are all things that can feel like the end of the world if we let them. Sometimes, you just need a little reminder that, hey, you’re doing OK. In fact, you’re doing better than OK. You’re doing great, and here’s why:
1. You’re Still Standing!
Whatever it is that has you down, here’s the good news – you survived it. You might not feel that great, but you’re still alive and kicking. Every experience, good or bad, can be learned from. While you’re working your way through something difficult, the lesson can be impossible to see. But just know that whatever it was that you went through, you were strong enough to survive it.
2. You Are Loved
Think about all of the people you have in your life. Your group of friends, your parents, grandparents, siblings. Even during a disagreement, they still love you. Even when you fail at something, they still love you. When you’re going through a tough time, remember that there is always someone you can turn to. Whether you need a shoulder to cry on or an ear to listen, a friend is only one call away.
3. You’re Improving
If you can honestly say that you’re a better person than you were yesterday, in any capacity, then you’re doing just fine. Maybe you’re getting better at playing a musical instrument, being kinder to those around you, studying to become more knowledgeable, taking care of someone who needs it or giving back to your community. Maybe you finally kicked a bad habit. If you’re working toward bettering yourself — whatever that means to you — then you’re on the right track.
4. You Have Goals
Even if you don’t have a bucket list written out on a piece of paper, you have goals. Whether they include finishing school, earning a degree, traveling, becoming well-known for a special talent, or even starting a family, you have dreams and you’re willing to work to make them come true.
5. You Care
If you’re genuinely worried about whether or not you’re on the right track, and wondering whether or not your improving, you’re going to be just fine, because you care. You care about working toward your goals, you care enough to dream big, you care enough to be disappointed when things don’t work out, and you care enough to take a step back and evaluate your progress.
Remember — You aren’t competing with anyone. Each person takes a different journey through life. Everyone learns lessons at different times and everyone faces both success and failure. Your journey is your own, and no one is in charge of your happiness but you. Things are going to be OK, and more importantly, you are going to be OK.
