Let’s travel back in time to 480 BCE, on a narrow coastal pass between the mountains and the Aegean Sea. Here, 300 Spartan warriors held the line against the largest army the ancient world had ever assembled. The Spartans, trained for war, engaged the Persian soldiers to give disparate Greek city-states time to assemble an alliance against invasion.

So how did 300 Spartan warriors manage to hold off over 100,000 soldiers before a traitorous Greek showed Xerxes the way around?

So, yes, the 300 number is part myth: 300 Spartans did not stand alone. As many as 7,000 warriors marched to meet Xerxes’s army. In the end, though, those who chose to fight to the death to delay the Persians included the Spartans and the Thespians. Spartan King Leonidas led the force with skill and perseverance.

What modern-day storytelling leaves out is the very real, day-to-day business of the Spartan community that contributed to their fierce nature. They trained relentlessly for war from the age of 7. They lived for the community, protecting their freedoms through battle (yet they also had a slave population that far outnumbered their own).

Meals took place in the mess hall, with community meals solidifying the warrior’s bond. The Spartan diet was famously deliberately plain, and that was entirely intentional. Austerity at the table was considered a civic virtue, a form of discipline that kept citizens hard and ready for war.

But though the word “spartan” derives from the hard nature of this ancient people, they did enjoy one very potent superfood: olives. From olives comes olive oil, and they not only ate it with their barley rations, they also rubbed their bodies with it.
